A user interface that pushes boundaries

Culture

The Alien Athena Foundation for Art is a non-profit foundation in Berlin, founded by the artist Michael Müller and the art collector Geraldine Michalke. The institution promotes exchange between different artists, disciplines and cultures, inspired by Müller’s boundary-pushing understanding of art. The foundation supports new work, organises exhibitions, issues publications and awards a performance prize with a mentoring programme.

The design system that Stan Hema developed for the Alien Athena Foundation of Art is based on Michael Müller’s artistic practice. Born in 1970, the German-British artist is known for his interdisciplinary and conceptual approaches. His work transcends the traditional boundaries of art forms and media. He often integrates philosophical, scientific and social questions into his work, focusing on continuity and complexity. Both are reflected in the foundation’s logo and the changing content of the homepage.

The website, which was developed in-house, was created in an agile, iterative process. The navigation is via interactive, artistic motion elements: art as a compass. For experienced Stan Hema UI designer Arik Hohmeyer, the art project represented an exciting alternative to the barrier-free websites for companies, cultural institutions and major brands: ‘Expanding web design with UI elements, throwing conventions out the window and deliberately designing something that was confusing was challenging, but a refreshing approach at the same time,’ he says of the process.
