Myth comes alive

Culture

Michael Müller’s room-filling painting “The Given Day” tells the ancient myth of Castor and Polydeuces in impressive visual language. The work makes the cyclical journey of the twins between Olympus and Hades tangible – hour by hour, day by day. Exhibited in the staircase hall of the Neues Museum in Berlin, the work brings the ancient narrative back to the place where figures of the Dioscuri once stood.

Stan Hema was commissioned to develop an interactive digital extension of the work, which reveals the creation process of the monumental artwork and brings the ancient saga of Castor and Polydeuces to life in an immersive way.

The resulting app enables a sensually deepened access to the work through the connection of art, myth and technology – on site in the museum or as a digital experience on the go.

Stan Hema developed the immersive app holistically in close collaboration with artist Michael Müller – from storytelling conception through UX/UI design, 3D and motion elements to technical implementation.

The app is a production by Stan Hema – in cooperation with the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection/Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Alien Athena Foundation for Art.

The staircase hall of the Neues Museum in Berlin once housed majestic sculptures of the Dioscuri. These statues were lost during World War II. Eight decades later, a contemporary adaptation revives this chapter of the building’s past. A conversation between myth, space and remembrance.
