A symphony of colour

Culture

Founded in 1949, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s leading orchestras and has been under the direction of chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle since 2023.

The BRSO took on a pioneering role in the development by Stan Hema of the new design system for Bayerischer Rundfunk. Our goal: a strong visual identity that respects the existing brand and at the same time fits harmoniously into the design system.

The new BRSO logo follows the BR brand system, with a restrained colour scheme: white lettering on a black background. While other BR brands work with circles, squares and triangles, the BRSO image builds on its visual heritage and places typographic elements at the centre of the brand language.

With a design principle that is as simple as it is effective, we have created an independent appearance within the overarching BR design system. Instead of pure black and white, we focus on colour and contrast soft pastel shades with strong accents. The typography remains the central design element in the process.

A clear desire was formulated in our creative exchange with the musicians: ‘Give us colour!’ We have fulfilled that wish with the new design concept. It gives the BRSO a visual identity that underlines the artistic excellence of the orchestra – clear, distinctive and dynamic.
