An interactive, scalable online campus

The HPI d–school at the Hasso Plattner Institute is a leading centre for innovation and design thinking in Europe. It offers courses for students, experts, managers and even companies that want to develop new ideas and drive innovations forward. To strengthen its digital presence, the Potsdam-based institute tasked us with developing the d–school brand and redesigning its online platform in close collaboration with the d–school designers who are in charge of it.

The new website was to position d–school as a pioneer in innovation and digitisation. To make this happen, the three core areas – education, training and research – have been merged and structured clearly under a single brand. Our common goal: a digital identity with a concise visual classification system that conveys the innovative spirit of d–school.

Our main objective was to develop a modern online campus. We interviewed representatives so as to understand the needs of the various target groups precisely. Using our findings, we designed a clear information architecture and a flexibly adaptable digital design that offers orientation and inspiration – accessible, responsive and future-proof.

Based on these requirements, we developed a modern, flexible website with intuitive navigation and interactive modules. We took particular care to make sure that the content is clear and comprehensible. A clear structure, simple navigation and well-positioned interaction points all reduced the level of complexity.

We were even able to fulfil the request for a ‘progressive yet appealing design’. The new digital identity of d–school supports its brand recognition with every click. The new design system is so flexible that future upgrades and modifications are easy to implement by means of tailored modules. As such, the interactive digital campus has proven to be an authentic platform that encourages innovation and connects people – exactly what d–school stands for.
