Set roles rather than sections
Brands need design and language to breathe. How Stan Hema combines the two is shown in the magazine bauhaus now, a part of the bauhaus100 cosmos. From the very first minute of the project, our designers and editors paid close attention to the dramaturgy of stories, formats and visuality. In the process, we didn’t think in terms of sections, but roles.
Designers developed content, while editors worked on the look of bauhaus now. Together, they built up a network of authors and artists who shared our idea of a modern Bauhaus magazine. That can be seen in the depth of the editorial work: the typography and texts reflect the core topic in each of the three issues.

Although each is entirely individual, the three editions of bauhaus now also form a unit in terms of content and visuals. The photography, graphics and journalistic formats provide mutual reinforcement rather than stealing the show from each other.
In the anniversary year of the Bauhaus, a print medium has thus been created that reaches the masses at news stands, is appreciated in the professional world and has brought Stan Hema a lot of positive feedback in the design scene. We are particularly pleased about the popularity of the work produced: the entire trilogy is now highly valued by collectors.
In what was almost a political project, involving many strong players – the federal government, the German federal states, the curators, the tourism industry – it was crucial to meet everyone’s expectations. ‘Despite different interests, we have succeeded in creating a series of magazines that shows attitude and invites open discourse, while also offering high quality and contemporary design,’ says editorial designer Fabian Maier-Bode, summarising his work.
